FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 16, 2024) — The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives is inviting the public for a free event April 17 at noon in Frankfort with Roda Ferraro, director of the Keeneland Library, about the traveling exhibit “The Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers.” The exhibit highlights the lives and careers of 80 African-American horsemen and women from the mid-1800s to today.
From racetrack superstars to behind-the-scenes caretakers, the exhibit showcases select stories of the countless African Americans who forged their way in Kentucky and beyond, making the racing industry what it is today. One-of-a-kind photographs from Keeneland Library collections capture moments across their varied careers, while biographical vignettes honor their lasting legacies.
Ferraro has more than 25 years of experience leading, assessing and promoting library, museum, research and educational services, including her work with the Keeneland Library and National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame since 2014. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to the event.
The free traveling exhibit is currently at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives at 300 Coffee Tree Road in Frankfort until May 31. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. EDT.
