Literacy Assessment Flowchart supports assessment and instructional planning
As schools continue implementation efforts throughout the 2026-2027 school year, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) reminds educators that the Literacy Assessment Flowchart is available as a quick reference for planning assessment practices that support informed instructional decisions.
The flowchart outlines the who, what, when and why of early literacy assessments, helping educators understand the sequence of universal screening and diagnostic assessment within a comprehensive literacy system. It also includes embedded links to related KDE resources for additional guidance and support.
The Literacy Assessment Flowchart can serve as a tool as schools plan to identify student needs early and provide timely, targeted instruction and intervention.
Access the Literacy Assessment Flowchart to support local assessment planning and instructional decision-making.
New mathematics improvement plan resources available
To support implementation of the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Act, KDE has released a Mathematics Improvement Plan Template and a new Mathematics Improvement Plan Teacher Guide for K-3 educators.
These resources are designed to help schools develop, implement and monitor mathematics improvement plans required for students identified as needing accelerated progress in mathematics. Aligned with key MTSS practices, the resources support data-based decision-making, progress monitoring and targeted intervention planning.

Kentucky Teacher Workload Survey
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is conducting a statewide survey to better understand teacher workload and the conditions that shape teachers’ professional time.
The survey will help KDE learn more about:
- How Kentucky teachers spend their professional time;
- Where workload pressures are greatest;
- How planning time, instructional resources and other responsibilities shape teachers’ work; and
- What supports, staffing considerations or structural changes may help create more sustainable teaching conditions.
What teachers should know
- The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
- Unless otherwise noted, teachers should answer based on their experiences during the last 30 school days.
- Participation is voluntary.
- District information is collected only to help KDE understand differences across regions.
- Responses will be reported in aggregate, and individual teachers will not be identified.
- Findings are intended to help KDE better understand teacher workload and working conditions—not to evaluate individual teachers, schools, districts, curriculum programs or technology tools.
We need to hear from Kentucky teachers!
Broad participation will help KDE develop a clearer picture of teachers’ work across different grade levels, subject areas, districts and school contexts throughout the Commonwealth.
Complete the Kentucky Teacher Workload Survey.
The survey closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on Oct. 31, 2026.
