Numeracy Counts Partner Spotlight: EPIC Numeracy Alliance
The EPIC Numeracy Alliance is a two-year professional learning model designed to deepen teachers’ and leaders’ conceptual understanding of critical mathematics content while strengthening instructional practice and collective responsibility for student learning. Across both academies, the Alliance focuses on building teacher skill, increasing self-efficacy in delivering grade-level mathematics, and supporting continuous improvement through collaboration among teachers and leaders.
Grades 3–5 Academy:
During Year 1, educators focused on deepening their understanding of early fraction concepts. In Year 2, the focus shifted to fraction sense and operations, strengthening conceptual understanding and instructional decision-making around grade-level fraction standards.
Grades 6–8 Academy:
During Year 1, educators focused on deepening their understanding of proportional reasoning. In Year 2, the focus shifted to algebraic thinking, supporting the transition from multiplicative reasoning to expressions, equations, and relationships across middle school mathematics.
Across the first year of implementation, the EPIC Numeracy Alliance demonstrated a measurable impact on how teachers think about and teach mathematics. Teachers overwhelmingly reported that participation positively influenced their instructional practice (mean = 4.48 out of 5), with the greatest areas of growth in understanding how students learn mathematics, using effective instructional strategies, and increasing confidence in teaching grade-level content. Significant gains in mathematics teaching self-efficacy were observed overall, with particularly strong growth among Grades 3–5 educators, indicating that the Alliance is building both competence and confidence where it is most needed to support foundational learning.
Beyond individual classrooms, the EPIC Numeracy Alliance is strengthening the professional culture around mathematics instruction. Teachers showed significant growth in mathematics teacher identity and high levels of collective efficacy across the first year, signaling shared responsibility for improving student learning. Importantly, teachers reported strong intentions to apply what they learned in their classrooms and leadership roles (mean = 4.22 out of 5). Notably, teachers who identified themselves as still developing content knowledge expressed the highest motivation to implement new practices, reflecting a healthy growth mindset fostered by the Numeracy Alliance.
Kentucky Numeracy Counts Teacher and Administrator Academies Information Session
The Kentucky Center for Mathematics (KCM), Partnership Institute for Math and Science Education Reform (PIMSER) and Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) invite you to participate in a virtual webinar information session. Join us to learn about the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Academies (Elementary Teacher and Administrator) designed to empower educators in advancing mathematics achievement. Discover how these academies can transform math teaching and learning as well as math-specific leadership practices through dynamic, research-based professional learning. During this information session, we will provide specific details about academy dates, times, and content, including preview of strategies, leadership insight and practical tools tailored to improve numeracy outcomes. This information session will conclude with next steps for your local involvement. Join us to discover how the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Academies can create a lasting impact on your students, teachers, school, district and the entire state!
Together, participants will:
- Receive information on what supports are available for local implementation from KCM and PIMSER and how the two organizations are providing a synergistic approach to local school improvement in mathematics.
-
Learn specifics about both the Elementary Teacher and Administrator Academies including objectives, dates, locations, suggested participants and application information.
