(FRANKFORT, KY) – The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) invites potential residential camp sponsoring organizations to attend a free training. Training for residential camps will be provided on Dec. 4, and training for Upward Bound camps will be provided on Dec. 3. The training sessions will be held at 300 Sower Blvd. in Frankfort.
KDE encourages nonprofit residential summer camps that offer an organized program and serve regularly scheduled meals to consider participation in the Summer Food Service Program. Sponsors must be organizations that are fully capable of managing a meal service program, following regulations and be responsible – financially and administratively – for operating the program.
Many Kentucky families depend on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. When school is out for the summer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and KDE's Summer Food Service Program helps ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals to bridge the nutrition gap during these months.
With state agency approval, a residential camp may claim reimbursement for serving up to three meals per day to children who are determined to be eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Federal income eligibility guidelines are published each year by the USDA.
Potential sponsors and other parties interested in more information can provide contact information in the Summer Food Service Program Interest Survey. You will be contacted regarding the program and training registration.
More information can be found on the USDA website, including the USDA’s nondiscrimination statement.
