Join Us for a FREE Interactive Virtual Webinar: Introducing The Kentucky Atlas of Phenomena!
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) science program consultants invite you to participate in a virtual webinar showcasing an exciting new resource: The Kentucky Atlas of Phenomena (KAP). This resource was designed by Kentucky educators for Kentucky educators to support the implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards for Science by deepening their understanding of local natural phenomena common to Kentucky and the disciplinary core ideas (DCIs) needed to explain them.
What to Expect: This engaging webinar offers an excellent opportunity for district leaders, school leaders and science educators across Kentucky to collaborate as learners and practitioners. Together, participants will:
- Explore the value of using locally relevant phenomena in science instruction.
- Consider how to localize phenomena within high-quality instructional resources.

Aligning Tier 2 Intervention with Tier 1 Instruction When Using an HQIR Resource Now Available
Using targeted, forward-looking interventions before and during a unit of instruction with a high-quality instructional resource (HQIR) accelerates learning by delivering “just-in-time” support to students with lower readiness in the Tier 1 classroom. This approach reinforces prerequisite knowledge and skills and provides additional practice with challenging material, building on Tier 1 differentiation to help prevent unproductive struggle and over-scaffolding or simplifying learning. Aligning Tier 2 interventions with Tier 1 outcomes and context ensures coherence in learning, which boosts engagement, retention and transfer.
To support districts in creating greater coherence for all students, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has developed the Aligning Tier 2 Intervention with Tier 1 Instruction When Using an HQIR guidance. This new resource:
- Explains why alignment of Tier 2 with Tier 1 is a critical aspect of HQIR implementation;
- Clarifies the interplay between Tier 2 and Tier 1 during an HQIR unit of instruction; and
- Offers a sequence of eight steps districts can follow to achieve better alignment.
New Resource Available! Curriculum Implementation Monitoring Toolkit
As districts across Kentucky work to implement high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs), they have recognized a need to measure the effectiveness of their implementation to ensure the HQIR positively impacts the student experience and outcomes.
In response to this need, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) created the Curriculum Implementation Monitoring Toolkit that defines the key aspects of an implementation “ecosystem” critical to maximizing the impact of an HQIR. The toolkit includes:
- Specific tools for monitoring each of the six aspects;
- Recommendations for use of each tool; and
- Resources to support analyzing the data across a school year to inform progress, make adjustments and determine next steps.
