Resource Spotlight! Support HQIR Implementation with Intellectual Preparation
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Office of Teaching and Learning developed the Intellectual Preparation Guidance document to support effective implementation of a strong local curriculum anchored in high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs). Intellectual preparation is a foundational aspect of curriculum-based professional learning (CBPL) and refers to the process through which teachers work collaboratively to deepen understanding of the HQIR and develop content knowledge and pedagogical skill in order to provide high-quality instruction to all students.
The guidance document provides an overview of the four core processes that make up intellectual preparation, which include unit and lesson internalization, lesson rehearsal and student work analysis. For each core process, the guide also includes content-specific versions of protocols to support the work.
Feedback Sought on Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics
The KDE is seeking feedback on the current Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics.
KRS 158.6453 calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year, and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
Standards outline what students are expected to learn in each grade to successfully transition to the next level of learning. The curriculum or methods and resources used to teach the standards is a separate issue and decided at the local level.
Use this survey to provide feedback on the mathematics standards. Due to the amount of text within the survey, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen. Participants are provided with the opportunity to give feedback on all standards or self-selected areas of interest.
Feedback on the current mathematics standards will be collected by the American Institutes for Research through Oct. 3.
Questions on this process can be directed to standards@education.ky.gov.
Applications Sought for Mathematics Standards and Assessment Review Committees
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is accepting applications for the Mathematics Standards and Assessment Review Committee (RC) and Advisory Panels (AP).
KRS 158.6453 calls for the KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. The review process for the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics will begin in Fall 2025.
The KDE is seeking current K-12 classroom teachers to participate in this work. Applicants will be required to meet approximately five to 10 days throughout Fall 2025 through Spring 2026.
If applicable, team members will receive reimbursement for travel expenses and the teacher’s school district will be reimbursed for substitute teacher expenses. Selected applicants will be asked to verify the willingness of their school or district to release them for work dates.
The online application will be posted for 30 days. Applications will be accepted through Oct.3. Selected team members will be notified by Oct 17.
Questions on this process can be directed to standards@education.ky.gov.
 Constitution Day
Tuesday, September 17 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. This day commemorates the September 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution. In accordance with federal requirements, every educational institution receiving federal funding must provide an educational program for students focused on the U.S. Constitution. The KDE’s Constitution Day document features resources from a variety of organizations that may support educators in planning their instruction for Constitution Day.
