Feedback sought on Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading and Writing
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the draft Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading and Writing. KRS 158.6453 calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year, and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
New Civics Literacy Requirement Webpage and Revised Civics Test Manual
House Bill (HB) 535 (2024) amends Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 158.141 to require, beginning with students entering grade 9 in the 2025-2026 academic year, a one-half credit course in civic literacy or a civics test for graduation. In order to support districts in implementing this requirement, the Kentucky Department of Education is launching the new Civics Literacy Requirement webpage. This page includes information on the three options districts have when implementing this requirement:
1. A one-half (1/2) civic literacy credit in addition to the existing 3 social studies credits required for graduation;
2. A one-half (1/2) civic literacy credit embedded within the existing 3 social studies credits required for graduation;
3. A civics test composed of one hundred (100) questions drawn from those that are set forth within the civics test administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to persons seeking to become naturalized citizens.
The previous webpage supporting the Civics Test has moved to the Civics Literacy Requirement webpage. This page includes the revised Civics Test Manual that provides guidance on this amendment, including information on reporting results.
Approved Lists for Early Literacy and Numeracy Screening and Diagnostic Assessments Have Been Updated
KRS 158.305 and KRS 158.8402 require each superintendent to select a universal screener and diagnostic assessment for reading and math that have been determined by the KDE to be reliable and valid to be administered as part of a multitiered system of supports for students in kindergarten through grade three.
