Mid-Year Focus for Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Success
The beginning of a new semester is an ideal time to reflect, assess and reset the focus of the MTSS framework. At this time of the year, school and district MTSS teams are in the routine of meeting, reviewing data and making data-based decisions for effective implementation. The midpoint of the school year is an excellent time to evaluate MTSS implementation and identify opportunities for meaningful impact.
Enhancing communication, refining processes or addressing key areas of need can provide an immediate boost to the system’s effectiveness. It is essential to celebrate these accomplishments and maintain focus on the long-term goals of the MTSS action plan. The use of an action plan allows teams the opportunity to establish goals and monitor progress. This plan lays the foundation for guiding the way to maximizing student outcomes.
Explore the resources at KYMTSS.org to strengthen MTSS implementation and create systems that help all students thrive. Below are three key resources to support teams in the process.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Mid-Year Refresh
After any break, it is best practice to revisit the PBIS framework and provide the students with a refresher regarding the rules, routines and expectations. If your school does not have a PBIS system, now is the time for the team to plan for the 2025-2026 school year.
Suggestions to assist the MTSS Team with a PBIS refresher:
-
Reteach schoolwide and classroom expectations;
-
Reestablish predictable routines and procedures;
-
Use existing data collection system to monitor and drive decisions; and
-
Rebuild connections, and reestablish a positive greeting when welcoming students into the learning space.
