Maximizing Transitions for Effective Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Implementation
MTSS is a continuous improvement process, involving the collective efforts of monitoring, analyzing, reflecting and adapting. Transition times, such as the start of the school year, grade-level changes, and between classes, can significantly impact student success. Many students experience major transitions from elementary to middle school, middle to high school or moving between districts. Effective and intentionally planned transitions give students and adults the content and structure needed for success. Whatever stage of the MTSS implementation process, the beginning of the school year is a wonderful time to maximize the season of transition.
Considerations for MTSS Transition Planning
-
Establish positive communication with all members of the school community at the beginning of the year, including staff, students, families and community partners. Develop a communication plan to maintain positive relationships throughout the school year.
-
Gather and examine historical data regarding behavior, academic performance, attendance and other factors. Utilize the findings to develop proactive instruction and intervention plans for the current year.
-
Monitor before, during and after transitions. Prepare to provide just-in-time support and adjust intervention plans as needed.
-
Provide targeted professional learning focused on managing transitions within the MTSS framework. Support staff in adapting to new routines or changes as needed.
-
Review previous intervention plans for incoming students. Coordinate efforts across teams to ensure consistency of instruction, intervention and support. For example, if the previous district or school used a strategy that helped a student be successful, the new school can pick up right where the last one left off and continue to provide intervention and support. This allows teams to continue the support that has already proven successful.
