KyMTSS Implementation Guide
Summer break is a great time to reflect and prepare for the new school year. To assist with the process, Kymtss.org has numerous resources to support schools and districts. One key resource, the KyMTSS Implementation Guide, provides implementation guidance for leaders and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) teams. The KyMTSS Implementation Guide aids districts and schools in establishing and maintaining an integrated three-tiered model of prevention to address students’ academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs.
By introducing MTSS as an organizational framework, the guide outlines six essential elements necessary for effective implementation. The guidance and examples included in the document align with current research and best practices in MTSS adopted from national and state models that have been shown to be effective. Throughout the process, teams are encouraged to elicit student feedback to address needs and gain perspective on the learner experiences within the MTSS framework. Additionally, the guide emphasizes the importance of involving family and community partners in the process to foster collaboration and communication.
While the implementation guide provides support, teams may encounter situations where additional assistance might be beneficial. In such cases, teams may seek further MTSS implementation guidance from a school or district MTSS Point of Contact, a Kentucky Regional Educational Cooperative or through the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) technical assistance.
Five MTSS Implementation Tips
- Schedule and engage in regular MTSS team meetings to review progress and discuss how to integrate the guide's recommendations into existing practices and initiatives.
- Familiarize the team with the guide's structure, including its sections on the essential elements and infrastructure key features.
- Conduct a KyMTSS Self-Assessment of current practices within the district or school to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Establish clear goals, aligned with the KyMTSS essential elements, for implementing or enhancing MTSS within the local context.
- Maximize the use of technology and data visualization tools to make data analysis more accessible and actionable for all.
