The conference will take place June 20, 2024, at the Central Bank Center, formerly the Lexington Convention Center.
Keynote speaker and educational journalist Emily Hanford, host of the Sold a Story podcast, the second-most-shared show on Apple Podcasts in 2023 and one of Time magazine’s top three podcasts of the year, has been covering education for American Public Media since 2008. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the EWA Public Service Award in 2019 for Hard Words and the 2017 Excellence in Media Reporting on Education Research Award from the American Educational Research Association.
The conference is FREE to Kentucky K-12 public educators and offers focused learning pathways to meet the needs of teachers and administrators. Attendees will learn from KDE OTL consultants and partners about:
- Evidence-based instructional shifts for literacy;
- The benefits of structured literacy;
- Why high-quality instructional resources matter; and
- Available resources for implementing the Read to Succeed Act.
Onboarding New Teachers: Standards Professional Learning and Evidence-Based Instructional Practices
The Standards Implementation Guides provide a template for sequencing standards professional learning for new teachers. Guides are available for the Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading and Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, in addition to a General Standards Implementation Guide.
These guides help districts and schools plan for differentiated professional learning opportunities around standards implementation that use the most current resources.
Districts and schools also may find the Evidence-Based Instructional Practices (EBIPs) resources especially helpful for use with new teachers. An overview document provides background on EBIPs. There is also an overview video, facilitation considerations, and content area specific resources for six EBIPs: Establishing the Learning Environment; Clarifying and Sharing Clear Learning Goals; Explicit Teaching and Modeling; Discussion; Questioning; and Meaningful Feedback.
ICYMI: UPCOMING Science Professional Learning Module and Virtual Workshop: Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse
The Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse module is intended to provide guidance in the successful facilitation of equitable academic discourse, supporting the three-dimensional student learning called for in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science.
Science program consultants in the Office of Teaching and Learning, Amanda Prewitt and Erica Baker, will be offering a virtual workshop for participants to take part in this new professional learning module. This virtual workshop offers an opportunity for K-12 science educators to engage with one another as learners and practitioners, considering how to support student sensemaking with equitable discourse.
During the workshop, participants will:
- Develop strategies to establish a learning environment where all students have equitable access and opportunity to learn through discourse;
- Build a collaborative understanding of equitable academic discourse that supports student sensemaking;
- Examine why we should use equitable academic discourse in the science classroom;
- Explore how both teachers and students contribute to equitable academic discourse; and
- Participate in intentional planning for equitable academic discourse.
The workshop will include four sessions. Each session will consist of a two-hour synchronous virtual session paired with asynchronous opportunities between each session. It is important that participants are committed to attending all four sessions since each session builds upon the prior sessions. This workshop will require active participation and will engage participants in an adult learning experience symmetrical to the classroom experience using a high-quality open educational resource. Participants in this workshop will be asked to contribute to small group discussions in breakout rooms and whole group discussions. In addition, the asynchronous opportunities will consist of required readings and tasks preparing for the next session.
