Registration for the Kentucky Reading Academies: Cohort 3 of LETRS Professional Learning NOW OPEN!
Registration for the third Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) cohort of the Kentucky Reading Academies will be open from May 1, 2024, through August 30, 2024.
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has an exciting partnership that brings the LETRS professional learning to educators across the Commonwealth, called the Kentucky Reading Academies. This course of study was chosen because of its demonstrated success on a national scale in bringing significant increases in literacy achievement.
The Kentucky Reading Academies is a comprehensive no-cost professional learning opportunity open to all K-5 public school educators. More than 4,000 Kentucky educators and administrators are currently participating in the LETRS professional learning opportunity.
Two different courses are being offered through the Kentucky Reading Academies: LETRS for Educators and LETRS for Administrators. Interested educators can join the Kentucky Reading Academies by registering for the course that pertains to their role:
Please NOTE: Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 participants will not need to register for Cohort 3, as they are already enrolled in the professional learning.

Professional Learning Bulletin Board (PLBB)
A great place to find professional learning opportunities throughout the summer!
When the school year comes to an end and the summer sunshine is here, Kentucky educators can spend time learning and growing through professional development opportunities listed on the Professional Learning Bulletin Board.
This platform provides Kentucky educators with information regarding professional learning sessions tailored to their interests or to specified and desired areas of growth. Many sessions are asynchronous, meaning they can be accessed anytime at the leisure of the user, while others are face-to-face at designated locations.
Currently, there are multiple offerings through the Kentucky Department of Education, along with other professional learning providers, such as the regional educational cooperatives and national providers, such as the National Air and Space Museum. There is a wide variety of content available, and it can be filtered to meet your needs. This platform is updated regularly, and many sessions are completely free of charge.
Please note, however, per KRS 156.095 (8), “Posting information on the bulletin board by the department shall not be viewed as an endorsement of the quality of any specific provider or program.” Keep in mind that the local school district determines what is acceptable for credit based on its district policies.
REMINDER: UPCOMING Science Professional Learning Module and Virtual Workshop: Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse
The Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse module is intended to provide guidance in the successful facilitation of equitable academic discourse, supporting the three-dimensional student learning called for in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science.
Science program consultants in the Office of Teaching and Learning, Amanda Prewitt and Erica Baker, will be offering a virtual workshop for participants to take part in this new professional learning module. This virtual workshop offers an opportunity for K-12 science educators to engage with one another as learners and practitioners, considering how to support student sensemaking with equitable discourse.
During the workshop, participants will:
- Develop strategies to establish a learning environment where all students have equitable access and opportunity to learn through discourse;
- Build a collaborative understanding of equitable academic discourse that supports student sensemaking;
- Examine why we should use equitable academic discourse in the science classroom;
- Explore how both teachers and students contribute to equitable academic discourse; and
- Participate in intentional planning for equitable academic discourse.
The workshop will include four sessions. Each session will consist of a two-hour synchronous virtual session paired with asynchronous opportunities between each session. It is important that participants are committed to attending all four sessions since each session builds upon the prior sessions. This workshop will require active participation and will engage participants in an adult learning experience symmetrical to the classroom experience using a high-quality open educational resource. Participants in this workshop will be asked to contribute to small group discussions in breakout rooms and whole group discussions. In addition, the asynchronous opportunities will consist of required readings and tasks preparing for the next session.

Educators interested in this webinar series should complete the Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse Virtual Workshop Registration no later than Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Registrants will receive a communication including the link to the virtual learning space following registration.
Depending on district policies and if approved at the local level, participants may receive up to 12 hours of professional development credit for their participation in the workshop and asynchronous learning opportunities. Please work with your district or principal to determine if these hours are eligible.
