UPCOMING Science Professional Learning Module and Virtual Workshop: Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse
The Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse module is intended to provide guidance in the successful facilitation of equitable academic discourse, supporting the three-dimensional student learning called for in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science.
Science program consultants in the Office of Teaching and Learning will be offering a virtual workshop for participants to take part in this new professional learning module. This virtual workshop offers an opportunity for K-12 science educators to engage with one another as learners and practitioners, considering how to support student sensemaking with equitable discourse.
During the workshop, participants will:
- Develop strategies to establish a learning environment where all students have equitable access and opportunity to learn through discourse;
- Build a collaborative understanding of equitable academic discourse that supports student sensemaking;
- Examine why we should use equitable academic discourse in the science classroom;
- Explore how both teachers and students contribute to equitable academic discourse; and
- Participate in intentional planning for equitable academic discourse.
The workshop will include four sessions. Each session will consist of a two-hour synchronous virtual session paired with asynchronous opportunities between each session. It is important that participants are committed to attending all four sessions since each session builds upon the prior sessions. This workshop will require active participation and will engage participants in an adult learning experience symmetrical to the classroom experience using a high-quality open educational resource. Participants in this workshop will be asked to contribute to small group discussions in breakout rooms and whole group discussions. In addition, the asynchronous opportunities will consist of required readings and tasks preparing for the next session.

Educators interested in this webinar series should complete the Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse Virtual Workshop Registration no later than Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Registrants will receive a communication including the link to the virtual learning space following registration.
Educators will be eligible to receive up to 12 professional development hours for their participation in the workshop and the asynchronous learning opportunities. (Note: The decision to accept professional development hours is at the discretion of the local school/district.)

Opportunity for Middle and High School ELA & Social Studies: Holocaust and Other Cases of Genocide Community of Practice
In partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is offering a Holocaust and Other Cases of Genocide Community of Practice for middle and high school ELA and social studies classroom teachers.
The purpose of this professional learning is to engage in experiences and collaboration to answer the following question: "What does high-quality Holocaust and genocide education look like in practice?"
Applicants must be teaching in a public Kentucky middle or high school about the Holocaust or other cases of genocide in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Selected applicants will:
1. Attend the live or watch the recorded virtual Belfer National Conference provided for free by the USHMM on June 24-26, 2024;
2. Attend four (4) virtual community of practice meetings facilitated by KDE:
- Before the Belfer National Conference (date TBD),
- After the Belfer National Conference (date TBD),
- One meeting in September 2024 and
- One meeting in Spring 2025.
3. Use one of the resources provided by the USHMM during Holocaust or other cases of genocide instruction in the 2024-2025 academic year;
4. Reflect and share on the professional learning with representatives from the USHMM and KDE;
5. Provide a sample lesson plan aligned to the Kentucky Academic Standards and the resources included in the professional learning series, including responding to feedback from KDE consultants; and
6. Receive a stipend of $200 for completion of the community of practice objectives.
This learning experience is completely virtual and will begin in June 2024 and will end May 2025.
Depending on district policies and if approved at the local level, participants may receive up to 24 hours of professional development credit for attending the Belfer National Conference. Please work with your district or principal to determine if these hours are eligible.
There are a limited number of spots available for this community of practice. Selected participants will be notified on Wednesday, June 5.
Introduction to the Modeling Cycle Mathematics Module Now Available
During a student’s mathematics education, the word “model” is used in a variety of ways. Modeling with mathematics might include utilizing manipulatives, demonstration, role modeling and conceptual models of mathematics, all valuable tools for teaching and learning; however, these examples are different from participating in the Modeling Cycle. The Introduction to the Modeling Cycle resources will support educators in using the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics and the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME) Report to:
- Explore the components of the modeling cycle;
- Engage in a modeling task through the lens of a student and a teacher; and
- Look for opportunities to incorporate components of the modeling cycle within high-quality instructional resources.
