Introduction to the Modeling Cycle Mathematics Module Now Available
During a student’s mathematics education, the word “model” is used in a variety of ways. Modeling with mathematics might include utilizing manipulatives, demonstration, role modeling and conceptual models of mathematics, all valuable tools for teaching and learning; however, these examples are different from participating in the Modeling Cycle. The Introduction to the Modeling Cycle resources will support educators in using the Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics and the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME) Report to:
- Explore the components of the modeling cycle;
- Engage in a modeling task through the lens of a student and a teacher; and
- Look for opportunities to incorporate components of the modeling cycle within high-quality instructional resources.
The module slides and facilitator’s guide are available now on the Mathematics Professional Learning Modules page.
Interdisciplinary Literacy Practices Video Series Now Available
How can educators of all grades and content areas engage students in meaningful, relevant reading and writing?
The Interdisciplinary Literacy Practices are embedded within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading and Writing to give teachers of all grades and content areas tools to promote a literacy-rich environment that empowers independent, lifelong learners who think deeply and critically about text. The Practices should not be confused as additional standards, but they should guide teachers in providing intentional opportunities for students to practice the behaviors of a literate citizen.
As districts adopt high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs), Kentucky’s Interdisciplinary Literacy Practices may serve as powerful levers to increase student engagement with complex texts across all disciplines, promote text-based writing, and create space for meaningful student collaboration, all within the context of an HQIR.
Videos available in this series all feature Kentucky teachers using HQIRs and grade-level, complex texts:
The Interdisciplinary Literacy Practices in Action video series landing page provides a module and participant guide (adaptable for synchronous and asynchronous learning). Participants may receive up to 3 hours of EILA credit or professional development hours, if approved by the local district, for completing the module.
Onboarding New Teachers: Standards Professional Learning and Evidence-Based Instructional Practices
The Standards Implementation Guides provide a template for sequencing standards professional learning for new teachers. Guides are available for the Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading and Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, in addition to a General Standards Implementation Guide.
These guides help districts and schools plan for differentiated professional learning opportunities around standards implementation that use the most current resources.
Districts and schools also may find the Evidence-Based Instructional Practices (EBIPs) resources especially helpful for use with new teachers. An overview document provides background on EBIPs. There is also an overview video, facilitation considerations, and content area specific resources for six EBIPs: Establishing the Learning Environment; Clarifying and Sharing Clear Learning Goals; Explicit Teaching and Modeling; Discussion; Questioning; and Meaningful Feedback.
Professional Learning Bulletin Board (PLBB)
A great place to find professional learning opportunities throughout the summer!
When the school year comes to an end and the summer sunshine is here, Kentucky educators can spend time learning and growing through professional development opportunities listed on the Professional Learning Bulletin Board.
This platform provides Kentucky educators with information regarding professional learning sessions tailored to their interests or to specified and desired areas of growth. Many sessions are asynchronous, meaning they can be accessed anytime at the leisure of the user, while others are face-to-face at designated locations.
Currently, there are multiple offerings through the Kentucky Department of Education, along with other professional learning providers, such as Green River Regional Educational Cooperative, Central Kentucky Educational Cooperative, the Kentucky Writing Project and the National Air and Space Museum. There is a wide variety of content available, and it can be filtered to meet your needs. This platform is updated regularly, and many sessions are completely free of charge.
Please note, however, per KRS 156.095 (8), “posting information on the bulletin board by the department shall not be viewed as an endorsement of the quality of any specific provider or program.” Keep in mind that the local school district determines what is acceptable for credit based on its district policies.
For more information regarding professional learning, please visit KDE's professional learning webpage. You also can email Laura McCullough or call (502) 892-6637, ext. 4149.
Resources for Summer Learning
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) supports family engagement all year long. During the school year, the Standards Family Guides are a resource parents and caregivers may use to initiate conversations with their children regarding what they are learning at school.
Learning can continue when school is not in session. The summer months are an opportunity to further encourage families to enjoy literacy and numeracy experiences together in their own homes.
To support educators, parents, families and caregivers in encouraging summer learning, KDE is providing resources through the Summer Support webpages to help keep children’s minds active. Available resources include:
