Support students’ reading and writing in all content areas with Text-Based Writing Across Disciplines
How might we meaningfully connect reading and writing as complementary subjects across the curriculum?
Text-Based Writing Across Disciplines includes 40 text-based writing tasks that engage K-12 students in responding to a variety of texts as disciplinary experts do. See the Text-Based Writing Across Disciplines website for samples in:
- Writing to Learn,
- Writing to Demonstrate Learning and
- Writing for Publication.
This resource supports implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards to show how reading and writing fit authentically into content areas from kindergarten to grade 12. Samples are available for:
- Reading and writing,
- Mathematics,
- Social studies,
- Science and
- Visual/performing arts.
The Writing for Publication resources can be found on the Text-Based Writing Across Disciplines webpage.

Resources for Summer Learning
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) supports family engagement all year long. During the school year, the Standards Family Guides are a resource parents and caregivers may use to initiate conversations with their children regarding what they are learning at school.
Learning can continue when school is not in session. The summer months are an opportunity to further encourage families to enjoy literacy and numeracy experiences together in their own homes.
To support educators, parents, families and caregivers in encouraging summer learning, KDE is providing resources through the Summer Support webpages to help keep children’s minds active. Available resources include:
