(FRANKFORT, KY) – Almost 200 public school districts and private and residential child care institutions in Kentucky are participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) during the 2023-2024 school year.
The National School Lunch Program, a child nutrition program funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is a federally-assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. The NSLP provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children during the school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.
More than 90% of public schools also participate in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), which provides students with a nutritious breakfast and lunch each school day at no cost to all enrolled students without collecting household applications.
If you or your school would like additional information on the NSLP and the nutritional meal benefits it provides for students or if your agency is interested in becoming a sponsor of the NSLP, please contact the Kentucky Department of Education, Division of School and Community Nutrition, for additional information.
