New Resource Available Now: Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction
The Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction resource take educators on a journey designed to:
- Ground instruction in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics, thus reaffirming a commitment to equitable learning opportunities for all students in Kentucky;
- Support intentional integration of evidence-based instructional practices; and
- Expand educators' familiarity with strategies to interweave the development of social-emotional competencies along with mathematics content.
This resource answers the question, “How do we decide which roads to take through this world of mathematics?” It demonstrates how to cultivate vibrant student learning experiences that incorporate evidence-based instructional practices, while valuing educator expertise and autonomy.
This roadmap is intended for educators looking for support with:
-
Continuous improvement: The roadmap encourages self-reflection around current understanding of the standards and instructional approaches, considering shifts to those approaches when needed/appropriate; and
-
Collaboration: The roadmap offers educators opportunities to build collective agency around high-quality mathematics instruction and empowers educators to determine how to approach moving forward in a way that is manageable but meaningful.
A video orientation summarizes all the components available to support educators engaging with the resource. Educators are invited to explore the Roadmap Overview, the Roadmap itself and the grade-level samples developed in collaboration with Kentucky teachers. Current grade-level samples include grades 1, 5, 6 and high school functions.
All resources can be found on the Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction webpage.
Applications for Health Education and Physical Education Standards Committees Due on Friday, Sept. 29
Applications are being accepted for the Health Education and Physical Education Review Committee and Advisory Panels.
KRS 158.6453 calls for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to implement a process for reviewing academic standards and aligned assessments. Potential applicants are asked to verify the willingness of their school or district to release them for work dates throughout the school year.
The online application will be posted for 30 days. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 29. Selected team members will be notified by Oct. 13.
Questions on this process can be directed to the Standards Team.
Feedback Sought on Health Education and Physical Education Standards Through Friday, Sept. 29
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the current Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education.
KRS 158.6453 calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
Standards outline what students are expected to learn in each grade to successfully transition to the next level of learning. The curriculum or methods and resources used to teach the standards is a separate issue and is decided at the local level.
To provide feedback on the KAS for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education, access the public comment form. Due to the amount of text within the survey, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen.
Participants are provided with the opportunity to give feedback on all standards or self-selected areas of interest. Feedback on the current KAS for Health Education and KAS for Physical Education will be collected through Sept. 29.
Questions on this process can be directed to standards@education.ky.gov.
