Applications are being accepted for the Health Education and Physical Education Review Committee and Advisory Panels.
KRS 158.6453 calls for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to implement a process for reviewing academic standards and aligned assessments. Applicants will be required to meet virtually and/or in Frankfort for 5-10 days beginning in the winter of 2023-2024, continuing through summer with further meetings possibly taking place in the 2024-2025 school year.
When applicable, selected team members will receive reimbursement for travel expenses and the teacher’s school district will be reimbursed for substitute teacher expenses. Potential applicants are asked to verify the willingness of their school or district to release them for work dates throughout the school year.
The online application will be posted for 30 days. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 29, 2023. Selected team members will be notified by Oct. 13.
Questions on this process can be directed to the Standards Team.
Feedback Sought on Health Education and Physical Education Standards
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the current Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education.
KRS 158.6453 calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
Standards outline what students are expected to learn in each grade to successfully transition to the next level of learning. The curriculum or methods and resources used to teach the standards is a separate issue and is decided at the local level.
To provide feedback on the KAS for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education, access the public comment form. Due to the amount of text within the survey, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen.
Participants are provided with the opportunity to give feedback on all standards or self-selected areas of interest. Feedback on the current KAS for Health Education and KAS for Physical Education will be collected through Sept. 29.
Questions on this process can be directed to standards@education.ky.gov.
Resources for Constitution and Citizenship Day – Sept. 17
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is Sunday, Sept. 17. This day commemorates the Sept.17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students. Since this day falls on a Sunday, institutions may observe the day the week before or the week after Sept. 17.

Deadline to Apply for the Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction Workshop for Coaches Sept. 1
The Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction Workshop for Coaches seeks to guide instructional planning by taking educators on a journey designed to:
- Ground instruction in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics, thus reaffirming a commitment to equitable learning opportunities for all students in Kentucky;
- Support intentional integration of evidence-based instructional practices; and
- Expand educators' familiarity with strategies to interweave the development of social-emotional competencies with the development of mathematics content.
The workshop consists of a series of 2-hour synchronous, virtual sessions across the 2023-2024 school year. In the fall, the sessions will be for coaches only. In the spring, the coaches will attend with the classroom teachers from that school/district.
The vision is for coaches to attend the fall sessions to learn alongside one another, considering how the learning from the session can support coaching within the local school/district. During the spring sessions, the coaches would support facilitation of that same learning with the teachers they support at the local level, including embedded opportunities for coaches to lead small group discussions with local teams.
Fall Sessions*
- Session 1: Week of Sept. 25-28
- Session 2: Week of Oct. 23-26
- Session 3: Week of Nov. 13-16
- Session 4: Week of Dec. 18-21
Spring Sessions*
- Session 4: Week of Jan. 15-18
- Session 5: Week of Feb. 12-15
- Session 6: Week of March 11-14
- Session 8: Week of April 15-18
*Specific dates and times will be finalized once applicants have been selected. For each window there will be options provided within the weeks listed. Participants will only attend the one two-hour session they signed up for within each window.
A stipend of $500 from the Kentucky Department of Education will be provided for the coaches participating in the workshop.
There are a limited number of spots available for this workshop. Coaches interested in this opportunity should complete the Roadmap to High Quality Mathematics Instruction Workshop for Coaches application no later than Sept. 1. Selected participants will be notified no later than Sept. 8.
