NOW OPEN - Phase 2 of LETRS Professional Learning through the Kentucky Reading Academies
Registration for the second Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) cohort of the Kentucky Reading Academies is open until Aug. 31.
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has an exciting partnership that brings LETRS professional learning to educators across the Commonwealth, called the Kentucky Reading Academies. LETRS was chosen because of its demonstrated success on a national scale in bringing significant increases in literacy achievement.
The Kentucky Reading Academies is a comprehensive, no-cost professional learning opportunity open to all K-5 public school educators.
Two different courses are being offered through the Kentucky Reading Academies: LETRS for Educators and LETRS for Administrators. Interested educators can join the Kentucky Reading Academies by registering for the course that pertains to their role:
More than 1,800 Kentucky educators and administrators are completing the LETRS professional learning in Phase 1. On a survey of Phase 1 participants, 433 responded, and 95% noted that the information they are learning through the LETRS professional learning is new information. A total of 95% stated the learning is relevant to their role and 93% said the learning has helped them to better meet the diverse reading needs of their students.
Please NOTE: Phase 1 participants will not need to register for Phase 2, as they are already enrolled in the professional learning.

ICYMI: Recording of March 2023 Leadership Meeting Available
In order to provide equitable learning environments for all students, it is important for schools and districts to translate the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) into a guaranteed and viable curriculum. Additionally, it is critical that students receive strong, standards-aligned instruction supported by evidenced-based instructional practices.
The regional educational cooperatives, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), hosted live virtual meetings in March for district and school leaders to examine tools and resources available to create equitable learning environments at the local level. The session focused on the importance of developing a strong local curriculum supported by a primary high-quality instructional resource (HQIR) to help strengthen Tier 1 instruction. Key topics included:
- Kentucky Multi-Tiered System of Supports self-assessment tool;
- Importance of a common instructional vision;
- The role of HQIRs;
- Stakeholder communication and inclusion; and
- Science and social studies standards update.
A new tool, the Communication Plan Template, was shared to support districts in the area of stakeholder communication and inclusion regarding local curriculum work in alignment with KRS 160.345.
