What:
The Kentucky School for the Deaf is hosting multiple events on Friday, April 14, to commemorate the school’s 200th anniversary.
Founded on April 10, 1823, KSD was the first state-supported school of its kind in U.S. history. It also was only the fourth school specifically for deaf children in the country’s history.
When:
- 8:15 a.m. ET at Kerr Hall: A panel with special alumni guests for students.
- 9:30 a.m. ET at Kerr Hall: Students will be opening a time capsule from students in 1998, when the school celebrated its 175th anniversary. Then they will put items into a new time capsule that is scheduled to be opened in 25 years.
- 11 a.m. ET at Thomas Gym: Special guest Troy Kotsur, winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 2021 film “CODA,” and his wife, fellow actress and deaf education advocate Deanne Bray, will meet with students.
- 2-7 p.m. ET at the Jacobs Hall Museum: KSD will host a class reunion for students, ranging from the most recent graduates to the oldest living graduate.
