Meaningful Feedback
The formative assessment process is a key component of effective classroom instruction, as students and teachers work in ongoing cycles of eliciting, interpreting and acting on evidence of student learning.
At the heart of the formative assessment process is the use of descriptive and actionable feedback that allows students and teachers to make adjustments in order to close the gap between students’ current level of understanding and the intended learning outcomes. Research shows that feedback is one of the most powerful tools at a teacher’s disposal and, when done well, can equate to an effect size equivalent to a 28-percentile gain in student achievement (Beesley & Apthorp, 2010).
