Questioning
Creating a culture that supports students in meeting intended learning outcomes within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) is critical to establishing equitable learning environments for all students and is often reflected in the approach teachers and students use.
Questions serve as a barometer for the level of thinking occurring with the learning community of a classroom and can provide new realizations by unlocking the unknown. Rigorous and thoughtfully planned questions engage students, help them demonstrate depth of thinking, challenge their claims, assist them in drawing conclusions and assess students’ current or prior knowledge.

List of Approved Universal Screeners and Diagnostic Assessments – Updated Dyslexia Screening Information
To support the selection of valid and reliable universal screeners and diagnostics, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has compiled a list of approved universal screeners and diagnostics for district review. Additional dyslexia screener information has been provided in the recommendation list of universal screeners to aid districts in their decision-making process.
KDE recommends beginning with the “at-a-glance” comparison chart, which provides high-level details about each approved assessment. One-pagers providing further information about each assessment and the selection criteria used to select assessments also are available. All materials can be found on the Early Literacy Screening Assessments webpage.
-
Each superintendent shall select:
-
At least one reliable and valid universal screener for reading administered to all students in grades K-3; and
-
At least one reliable and valid reading diagnostic assessment administered as part of a multi-tiered system of supports for students in grades K-3.
-
All teachers of students in K-3 shall be trained on any reading diagnostic assessment and universal screener selected by the superintendent prior to administration of the assessment in the 2023-2024 school year.
Questions regarding the approved list of screeners and diagnostics may be emailed to Christie Biggerstaff, director of early literacy in the Office of Teaching and Learning.

Rank Change Opportunities for Kentucky Reading Academies’ LETRS Participants
A process has been developed to offer teachers participating in the Kentucky Reading Academies’ Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional learning the opportunity to achieve a rank change in partnership with Kentucky educational cooperatives.
Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) and Southeast South-Central (SESC) Educational Cooperative both have a Continuing Education Option (CEO) Program in which they are accepting LETRS participants. Participants who meet guidelines and expectations of the CEO programs and complete the two-year LETRS professional learning through the Kentucky Reading Academies would receive a rank change. The CEO programs offered at each cooperative includes costs that must be paid for by the participant.
Informational flyers about each program can be accessed at GRREC ED CEO and SESC CEO.
Any participant, no matter the cooperative region in which they live, can complete the CEO Program at GRREC or SESC. Both cooperatives are currently enrolling candidates into their CEO programs for LETRS. If you are interested, please email Rebecca Gaddie or Jason Reeves.
