KyMTSS Framework within a Cascading System of Supports Kicks Off
The Collaborative Response to Reimagine Schools for All (CRRSA) started in September with teams and other staff from the eight regional educational cooperatives coming together in Frankfort at the Sower Building for a day of collective learning to build capacity for MTSS implementation. Throughout the day, teams worked together to strengthen a common understanding of the key elements of the KyMTSS Framework within a cascading system of supports.
The cascading system addresses practices, infrastructure and building capacity. The closer the person is to the classroom level, the greater the focus is on implementing the practices. The closer the person is to the state level, the greater their focus is on supporting infrastructure and building capacity.
When a cascading system of supports is implemented with fidelity, students benefit from the collaborative support and demonstrate improved social, emotional, behavioral and academic outcomes.
Tools You Can Use
The Cascading System of Supports mini PowerPoint deck provides a connection to the United We Learn vision, an example of what a cascading system of supports might look like and a blank template that teams may use to clarify assistance within the particular level of the cascading system of supports.
Jan Sellers, state KyMTSS coordinator, shares information regarding the KyMTSS Cascading System of Supports with CRRSA Teams at the Sower Building in September.
KyMTSS Coordinator Transition
Jan Sellers retired on Sept. 30 after 28 years of school, district and state level educational service.
In her career, Sellers served as a school psychologist in Pulaski and Woodford counties. Before taking her role as the state KyMTSS coordinator at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), she also served as Woodford County's MTSS district coordinator for five years.
KDE wishes to extend a special thank you to Sellers for her commitment and dedication to the MTSS work in Kentucky. Under her leadership, the KyMTSS website and supporting resources were developed. She has served as a champion for building a common understanding of the MTSS Framework and providing educators with the resources needed to implement the process in districts. Best wishes are in order as she begins this next chapter.
Melissa E. Wainwright, Ed.D., will serve as the new statewide KyMTSS coordinator. Her education and experience include P-16 work with MTSS.
Serving as a high school principal, Wainwright's school was one of the first to participate in the University of Louisville's Kentucky Academic and Behavioral Response to Intervention (KY-ABRI) project. She went on to serve as a consultant with the KY-ABRI project, supporting schools and districts throughout the state. Most recently, Wainwright served as the director of professional learning and support at the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative, where one of her primary focus areas was to support school and district teams with MTSS implementation.
She completed her doctorate at the University of Kentucky, where her research focus considered collective leadership practices of a Response to Intervention system. Wainwright begins her state agency role in the cascading system of supports by providing technical assistance and training in the implementation of KyMTSS.
