Family Resources: Kentucky Academic Standards Family Guides
Strong partnerships between family and school are more important now than ever, and conferences are a great time to share the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) Family Guides.
The KAS Family Guides were developed to help families familiarize themselves with the concepts of each grade level’s standards and include suggestions for how families can reinforce standards content at home. Each guide contains a standards overview for reading and writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Guides are available for grades K-8 and high school and are available in Spanish for Spanish-speaking families.
Check them out on the Standards Family Guides webpage and make plans to share them with families soon!
Teacher Resources: Getting to Know the Kentucky Academic Standards PL Modules
The Getting to Know the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) Professional Learning Modules are a great way to ensure all teachers are familiar with the KAS. Modules are available for:
- Reading and Writing,
- Mathematics,
- Social Studies,
- Science,
- Health Education and Physical Education; and
- Career Studies and Financial Literacy.
The modules were developed by the Kentucky Department of Education and contain materials to be used in work sessions at the district, school or department level. These sessions are intended to support the successful transition to and implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards in classrooms across the state.
The duration, scope and sequence of the module sections may be customized to accommodate local needs and conditions. The sections are designed to provide flexibility for districts and schools and, as such, can be viewed as stand-alone lessons or within the progression of the module as written.
The following materials are part of each module:
- Getting to Know the KAS Facilitator’s Guide
- Getting to Know the KAS Participant Handouts (Links embedded in the Facilitator’s Guide)
- Getting to Know the KAS slide presentation
The goals of the Getting to Know the KAS modules are for districts and schools to:
- Build a shared understanding of the KAS documents;
- Strengthen the connection between the components of the KAS and the way those components can support teachers in the process of designing standards-aligned instruction and grade-level assignments;
- Experience how the changes in the KAS can and will be reflected in student experiences within Kentucky classrooms; and
- Identify and prioritize areas where future professional learning opportunities will be needed in the implementation process with the new KAS and discuss plans to address those areas.
