KBE discusses progress, updates to education technology in Kentucky schools

The Kentucky Board of Education held several discussions around online, virtual and remote learning during its regular meeting on Aug. 3, held at Lake Cumberland.

Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Associate Commissioner David Couch, Chief Digital Officer Marty Park and Division Director Mike Leadingham discussed the Kentucky Education Technology System (KETS) operational plan for the 2022-2023 school year.

2022 Kentucky Teacher of Year Willie Carver Jr. presents Year in Review to KBE

As his sabbatical with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) comes to a close, 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Willie Edward Taylor Carver Jr. had the opportunity to reflect on his past six months before passing the torch to the next teacher of the year.

“This program is not simply an opportunity for a teacher to have a platform – it has been the opportunity for a teacher to be the steward of his students’ voices, to do the sometimes painful, but always beautiful, work of shifting the lens, and future, of education,” said Carver at the Kentucky Board of Education’s (KBE’s) meeting on Aug. 3. Carver taught English and French at Montgomery County High School when he was named the Kentucky Teacher of the Year.

Unprecedented challenges during COVID have led to unprecedented opportunities

As summer winds toward fall and we consider the annual return to school for students, families and staff, it occurs to me that we are possibly at the precipice of our first undisrupted year of in-person learning since 2019. While it now appears that COVID-19 will be with us as part of “life on earth” going forward, with the availability of vaccinations and treatment protocols, we have been able to make the threat of this virus much less than where we were when all this started.

There is no doubt that our students missed out on so much due to the pandemic. From quality in-person experiences to academic growth, we have work to do.
