DEIB's winding summer road
We hope you’ve been staying safe (and cool!) this summer. The Kentucky Department of Education’s DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) team has been busy—on the road, connecting with local communities and providing support to educators across the state.

A brand-new equity playbook
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) announced on July 7 the launch of its Equity Playbook with public school districts across the Commonwealth opting into the project.
The KDE Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Team has partnered with engage2learn (e2L), an education consultant firm, and Kentucky’s regional educational cooperatives, to lead this work. The Equity Playbook provides district and school leaders with personalized coaching on evidence/research-based practices, content and resources to address opportunity gaps in one or more of the following areas:
- Student achievement;
- Utilization of funding and resources;
- Disproportionality relative to student discipline;
- Culture and climate; and
- Highly effective staff and high-quality instructional resources.

Let's talk about self-care
We know the summer can be busy, but it's important to take some time for yourself. Following are a few self-care tips to help you reset and get the most out of your summer break.
1) Calm your nervous system
Whether it’s cuddling under a weighted blanket or spending hours staring at the ocean, finding ways to calm your body and let go of the tension you’ve been holding. Do what feels good for your body. For some of us, that’s running. For others, that’s lying in the sun.
2) Give yourself processing time
The school year can be a constant stream of activities and stress. When we’re so “on'' all the time, it can be hard to process what is happening. Today, educators face everything from shrinking school budgets and increasing demands to debates about the pandemic and the risk of gun violence. So, there is likely a lot to unpack after the school year.
As you relax into the slower pace of summer, give yourself time to feel all your feelings. Whether you need to grieve or celebrate, don’t hold back. Whatever feelings you are experiencing, don’t fight them. Explore below to get the last two self-care tips!
