Alert Papers
Occasionally, a student will respond to a short answer or extended response item on the Kentucky Summative Assessments in a manner that arouses concern about the student’s safety or the safety of others. As tests are being scored, Pearson scorers will notice such responses and notify the Office of Assessment and Accountability and the District Assessment Coordinator (DAC) that a student response has been flagged an “alert paper.” An Alert Paper includes a student response to a test item that has caused concern. With paper testing, test proctors may also notice a concerning response during the test administration.
When an Alert Paper is flagged, Pearson will contact the DAC via email with the student’s response that needs attention. Pearson will send two emails to the DAC. The first email will inform the DAC that an Alert Paper has been discovered and will include a password in the body of the email. Soon after the first email is sent, a second email will follow. DACs will use the password from the first email to access the Alert Paper. The second email will contain a copy of the student’s response.
The DAC should not forward the emails to anyone but may print the response to share with parents or appropriate local authorities. Anyone viewing the student response should sign a Nondisclosure Form (ky.gov) and understand that the student response may contain information related to secure test items.
Alert papers (i.e., evidence within a student response that the student may cause harm to self or to others or may otherwise be suffering abuses) may be copied only by the DAC, BAC or school administrator. In this case these local district staff may photocopy the pertinent section of the student response and turn those pages over to the appropriate local authorities to assure the safety of the child and the community. The local district shall direct all local authorities that the student response may contain information related to secure test items. The local authorities shall sign a nondisclosure form.

As a reminder, scores must be entered for the Transition Attainment Record (TAR) and Alternate Kentucky Summative Assessment (AKSA) in the Student Registration Database (SRD) no later than close of business on June 3. This is a firm deadline in order to meet summer and fall deadlines for reporting, item analysis and data cleanup. If you need assistance, please contact Jason Howard and Darrell Mattingly.
