Kentucky's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (KyMTSS)
Over the past few months, the KyMTSS newsletter has highlighted essential elements of the KyMTSS framework. Our focus this month is Family, School and Community Partnerships.
Family, School and Community Partnerships
KyMTSS provides an organizational framework for families, schools and community partners to collaborate with the goal of improving student outcomes.
The concept of partnership expands the idea of engagement and recognizes that families, educators and others in the community share responsibility for students’ learning and well-being. Research over the past two decades continues to support the synthesis of findings by Anne T. Henderson and Karen L. Mapp (2002). When families, community groups and schools collaborate to support learning, students of all ages, backgrounds and across races and ethnicities:
-
Earn higher grades;
-
Attend school more regularly;
-
Have better social skills, display a more positive attitude toward school and behave better both in and out of school; and
-
Enroll in higher-level programs and persist to graduation.
The more the relationship between families, schools and the community is a real partnership, well-planned and intentionally executed, the more student achievement increases. The Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (2022) identifies four basic elements for building partnerships within a tiered framework:
-
Building positive relationships;
-
Engaging in two-way communication;
-
Ensuring equitable family representation; and
-
Making meaningful data-driven decisions.
MTSS leadership teams prioritize family and community partnerships by including them in their vision, mission and goals for continuous improvement. Leadership teams consider what is in place to actively engage families and community partners; what opportunities exist for eliciting representative family and community voice and shared decision making; and what supports are needed to increase engagement, participation and feedback on plans, policies and programs.
