Leadership from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) held a virtual meeting with superintendents on Jan. 6 to continue supporting districts recently impacted by tornadoes.
This week, KDE officials met with the state’s various education organizations to get a better understanding of what they are hearing from districts during this time.

Robert Asberry started on a new career path July 1 as the Hancock County superintendent. He succeeds Kyle Estes, who stepped down as superintendent after nine years of service.
An opportunity to return to his alma mater in 1996 to coach boys’ basketball encouraged Asberry to switch his college career path from pre-law to education.
“Once I started coaching again, there was no going back,” he explained. “I knew what I wanted to do. I had that passion, so I changed my major and ended up being a high school math and history teacher.”

January is a time for new beginnings and a new session of the Kentucky General Assembly. The session will start on Jan. 4 and must end by midnight on April 14.
This year is what we call a long session, where the legislature will meet for 60 days and pass a budget for the next two years. For the first time in many years, Kentucky’s economic picture is looking pretty rosy. We’ve had strong economic growth this past year and we’re heading into a budget session where cutting costs won’t be one of the most pressing issues on legislators’ minds.

Kentucky Board of Education
Former Johnson County Superintendent Steve Trimble is ready to begin advocating for all of Kentucky’s children as the newest member of the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE).
On Dec. 22, Gov. Andy Beshear appointed Trimble to the KBE, filling the vacancy left by former member Cody Pauley Johnson, who represented the 7th Supreme Court District. He will fill out the rest of Johnson’s term, which ends on April 14, 2024.
