Applications Being Accepted for Designing High-Quality Local Curriculum Pilot
Following the unprecedented interruptions to learning resulting from COVID-19, states, districts and schools are working to retool their systems and structures to ensure they can equitably support all students. The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is starting a pilot program to help schools and districts develop a high-quality local curriculum, including the selection of high-quality instructional resources, connected to the Model Curriculum Framework.
To address the diverse accelerated learning needs of students, there is a great need for schools and districts to design coherent curriculum that intentionally connects standards, instruction and assessment across classrooms. In the pilot program, KDE is seeking the participation of up to 32 schools from approximately 12 districts, representing the 8 cooperative regions. About 2-3 schools per district are expected to participate.
Technical assistance will be available via Zoom by 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 1. Applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 23.
More information including application instructions are available in the Designing High Quality Local Curriculum Pilot Application document

Resources for EBIP 2: Clarifying and Sharing Clear Learning Goals
The resources for the second Evidence-Based Instructional Practice (EBIP) are now available on the EBIP webpage, in addition to an EBIP General Introduction document.
Research consistently indicates the importance of students having access to quality, standards-aligned grade-level instruction. All of the work to create a written guaranteed and viable curriculum, to break down the standards and create aligned assessments is necessary, but the quality of the day-to-day classroom instruction students receive has a significant impact on their overall achievement. As teachers implement their local standards-aligned curriculum, it is important that they strategically and intentionally use evidence-based instructional practices that support students in reaching the intended learning outcomes.
A critical first step is to ensure that both the teacher and the students have clarity regarding the learning goals, relevance and success criteria within each unit of instruction and what they must do to reach those outcomes. To support teachers in this work, the second EBIP in the 2021-2022 Teaching and Learning Professional Learning Series focuses on Clarifying and Sharing Clear Learning Goals and includes the following:
- An overview video;
- A narrative introduction that synthesizes the current research on creating safe and supportive learning environments;
- Facilitation considerations for structuring the professional learning; and
- Content-specific resources to support implementation.
