Balanced Assessment Leadership Modules
School and district leaders play a key role in supporting and designing a comprehensive, balanced assessment system and creating the conditions necessary for high-quality formative assessment practice. To support leaders in this work, the Kentucky Department of Education has created a three-part professional learning series that includes:
Module 1: Leading a Comprehensive, Balanced Assessment System
This module supports school and district leaders in understanding the characteristics and value of a comprehensive, balanced assessment system, as well as the role that leaders play in developing and sustaining a comprehensive, balanced assessment system.
Module 2: Leading for High-Quality Formative Assessment
This module supports school and district level leaders in understanding the formative assessment process and the culture necessary for high-quality formative assessment to improve student outcomes. The module also takes a closer look at how leaders can empower teachers and foster student ownership of learning within the formative assessment process.
Module 3: Using Assessment Leadership Tools
This module orients school and district level leaders to a suite of tools to support comprehensive, balanced assessment systems and high-quality formative assessment practice. This module also helps leaders determine the purpose of each tool in the context of their own system, which tools are most relevant, and when and how to use them.
All modules and associated resources are available on the Leadership Trainings webpage under the Assessment Leadership heading.
High-Quality Instructional Resources and the High-Quality Instructional Resource Coordinator
A key part of standards-aligned instruction is the use of high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs) to support student learning.
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has created the HQIR flyer to help promote the definition and rationale of high-quality instructional resources. Instructional Resources Alignment Rubrics also are available on the HQIR page to aid in the evaluation and selection of HQIRs aligned to state standards.
In order to better communicate future HQIR guidance and resources to districts, the high-quality instructional resource coordinator position has been created and is available in Open House. It is imperative that districts identify an individual to serve as their local HQIR coordinator.
Please work with your local web application administrator point of contact (WAAPOC) to set the appropriate contacts through the Web Security Administrator (WSA) application (sometimes called People Manager). To make changes, log into the Web Application tool and select the Web Security Administrator – WSA (or People Manager) link. You can find district WAAPOCs listed in the Open House School and District directory.
Please Note: Changes to access (group membership) made in WSA will update Open House immediately, which allows you to double check the appropriate contacts and email addresses.
