Updated Standards Implementation Guidance Documents Provide Map for Professional Learning
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) recently updated the Standards Implementation Guides documents for the Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading & Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, in addition to a General Standards Implementation Guide.
Schools and districts may be in various stages of the standards implementation process, and the Standards Implementation Guides provide a list of resources by content area that may be used at each stage.
These guides can help districts and schools plan for summer professional learning opportunities around standards implementation that utilize the most current resources.
Social Studies Featured Resource: 'Minding the Gap' Module
The coronavirus pandemic has brought many challenges, including the need to accelerate student learning. The "Minding the Gap” professional learning module helps educators meet this need by providing guidance for identifying and closing gaps in their social studies program.
The goals of this module include:
- Build a shared understanding of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies progressions and grade-level expectations.
- Begin to map the expectations of the KAS for Social Studies to current practice and curricula.
- Identify gaps and overlaps between the KAS for Social Studies and current practice and curricula.
- Identify and prioritize existing gaps and consider available curriculum resources, time allocation for each content area and any additional solutions to eliminate gaps.
- Create a proposed plan of action to successfully implement the 2019 KAS for Social Studies and close gaps.
This Facilitator’s Guide provides suggestions for structuring each section of Module 2, recommended activities to prompt meaningful investigation of the KAS for Social Studies and guidance on talking points to use with the provided slideshows. Additional resources needed to engage with this module are the accompanying PowerPoint and Module at a Glance document.

Each day of the conference will focus on a particular grade band.
Compelling Question: How are you and/or your classmates improving your local, regional and/or global community?
Overview of requirements: Students and teachers will work together to identify a problem in the community and produce a product that communicates student conclusions about how they are improving their local, regional and/or global community. Products may include, but are not limited to, the following: argumentative writing and/or products, explanatory writing and/or products, discussions, multimedia presentations and podcasts.
Time Frame: The conference will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. ET on March 22-24, 2022, with a 30-minute break for lunch.
