‘Integrating Social, Emotional and Academic Development (SEAD) within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics’ Now Available
All learning is social and emotional. Research shows that integrating explicit attention to social and emotional competencies at the classroom level promotes an academic climate conducive to learning and can support individual students striving toward a collective goal of achieving a more equitable society (Charles A. Dana Center, 2016; The Aspen Institute, 2018).
"Integrating Social, Emotional and Academic Development (SEAD) within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics" is designed for educators to use when planning mathematics instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
For each grade level, the resource contains:
- Connections between the five social and emotional competencies established by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning and the expectations set forth within the KAS for Mathematics, specifically the Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMPs);
- Design considerations and specific examples of what integrating social, emotional and academic development might look like within the specific grade level;
- Questions to empower teachers to self-reflect on ways to integrate social, emotional and academic development within effective mathematics instruction; and
- Questions teachers can use with students to encourage the development of social and emotional competencies while also engaging students with the SMPs.
A reflection sheet is provided to support educators in processing new learning and reflecting on instructional implications. Facilitation considerations guidance also is provided to support those facilitating a learning experience around Integrating SEAD within the KAS for Mathematics at the local level, and an overview video is available as an orientation to all the components.
Reminder: Feedback Sought on Kentucky Academic Standards for Science
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the current Kentucky Academic Standards for Science.
KRS 158.6453 calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year, and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
Standards outline what students are expected to learn in each grade to successfully transition to the next level of learning. The curriculum or methods and resources used to teach the standards is a separate issue and decided at the local level.
Use this survey to provide feedback on the science standards. Due to the amount of text, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen. Participants are provided with the opportunity to give feedback on all standards or self-selected areas of interest.
Feedback on the current science standards will be collected by The Region 5 Comprehensive Center through Feb. 22.
