Collaborative Civic Spaces Module Supports Teachers with Having Conversations about Current and Controversial Issues
Do you need support in having conversations about current and controversial issues? As Commissioner of Education Jason E. Glass stated in a recent op-ed, “Public schools have a critical civic responsibility to prepare students, which means also preparing them to understand and work to resolve the kinds of complex and messy problems citizens ultimately must decide in the United States.” The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is here to support you.
The Collaborative Civic Spaces module is a free KDE resource that examines the role of teachers and students in building a collaborative civic space and provides instructional strategies to support current and controversial issue discussions. The goal of this module is to equip and empower schools and districts in cultivating and nurturing the collaborative civic spaces necessary to meet the instructional shifts within the Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies.
Participants will:
- Examine data that highlights some of the challenges to creating collaborative civic spaces;
- Examine the role of teachers and students in building a collaborative civic space;
- Explore tools and resources to engage student voice in building a collaborative civic space;
- Examine the proven practice of current and controversial issue discussions; and
- Analyze strategies that can be used to support current and controversial issue discussions through inquiry.
The "Creating Collaborative Civic Spaces" Module consists of six sections designed to be administered in professional learning community sessions and is available on the Social Studies Professional Learning Modules webpage.
