Welcoming Students for In-Person K Screen Administration

As schools and districts prepare to welcome students back to school in-person or virtually, some districts are screening incoming kindergartners as they come in to the building to register, pick up Chromebooks or iPads, meet their teachers and other events.

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) released a new COVID-19 guidance document on Aug. 17 that provides valuable information to support this method of administration of the kindergarten screen.

The “COVID-19 Considerations for Reopening Schools: Welcoming Students for Orientation and Targeted Services” guidance details appropriate measures districts should consider when bringing small groups of students into the building for short orientation periods or to provide targeted services.

The document presents universal expectations, models for efficient and safe orientations and considerations for targeted services and special populations.

As a reminder, the decision to bring students into the building for administration of the K Screen should be made in conjunction with the elementary school administration, central office staff and your local health department. These decisions should be made in accordance with local health department and state government guidelines at the time of testing. Safety expectations provided by KDE, your local health department and in the document, "COVID-19 Considerations for Reopening Schools," should be followed during administration.

Note: There is not a virtual option for the kindergarten screen. Students must be present physically to be screened.

K Screen Back-to-School Training Video

The Kindergarten Screener Back-to-School training PowerPoint and video include an update on the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) waiver of the screening and administration windows as set forth in 704 KAR 5:070.

The training also provides guidance on preparing for the administration of the screener to students attending school in-person, collecting information from families, entering data in the Brigance Online Management System (OMS) and Infinite Campus and other details to support a successful Kindergarten Screen administration.
