K Screen Implementation Guide
The 2020-2021 K Screen Implementation Guide is now available on the Common Kindergarten Entry Screener webpage. This guide includes new and updated information regarding the screening process for the coming school year.
Training Updates
A virtual Training of Trainers (TOT) option will be offered by Curriculum Associates on April 30. This six-hour training is required for anyone who will train others in the district to implement the K Screen.
After registering for the session, you will be contacted with meeting information and links to required resources. Please register by April 27. This virtual TOT session replaces the spring in-person sessions originally scheduled in March.
The July 22 Training of Trainers in-person session is still open for registration, however any changes will be communicated through future K Screen Updates.
The K Screen Refresher Webcast is required training for experienced TOTs. The webcast will be available May 5 on the KDE Media Portal.
K Screen Contacts
To best serve the K Screen community, it is important to understand the roles within each district and school. Please complete the K Screen Contact Information form and identify your role. It is important that all of the following participate:
- District Point-of-Contact
- School Point-of-Contact
- Kindergarten Teacher
- Data Entry Clerk
- Other roles pertaining to K Screen
If this update does not reach all of the staff listed, please complete the form and respond on his or her behalf.
Parent Resources
Kindergarten teachers with Brigance Online Management System (OMS) access can provide information and activities to support families of kindergarten students. These parent resources can be found within the Family Connections selection under the Resources tab in the OMS.
The COVID-19 Resources for Assessment and Accountability webpage also highlights a variety of resources for educators and parents, including resources for kindergarten readiness.
Screening Method (Repeat)
Schools and districts may elect to use iPads to document student screening results in lieu of ordering data sheets. It is possible to enter student responses directly into the Online Management System (OMS) without recording responses on data sheets.
Please remember the following points if choosing to screen with iPads:
- The OMS will not be active until mid-August, therefore screening students on an iPad should begin after school starts. Additionally, there are often adjustments needed when the OMS initially goes live. It is recommended that schools recording results with iPads schedule screening for mid to late August.
- Keep in mind screening results must be filed in each student’s cumulative folder. If screening with iPads, the student answer data sheet (not summary report) must be printed from the OMS and placed in each student’s cumulative folder.
- If choosing to screen with iPads in lieu of using data sheets, email Jennifer Akin for order tracking purposes.
Prior Setting Form (Repeat)
The prior setting form is available in English and can be found on the Common Kindergarten Entry Screener webpage. Remember, you may collect prior settings information at any time, not only during the screening window. It is recommended that you include this form in your kindergarten registration packet.
