KBE to continue looking for firm to run next education commissioner search

(FRANKFORT, KY) – The Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) voted at its Feb. 4 regular meeting to re-release a request for proposals (RFP) for executive search firms wanting to manage the search for the state’s next education commissioner.

The first RFP was released in late December and closed after three weeks. Board member Lee Todd said the timing of the RFP limited the number of proposals and it was worth seeking more proposals before selecting a search firm.

After the meeting, Associate Commissioner Robin Kinney said she anticipated the RFP being released soon with proposals accepted through February. Interim Education Commissioner Kevin C. Brown said the board is still hoping to have a new commissioner by July 1.

In preparation for the search, the Kentucky Department of Education has been inviting residents and stakeholders to take a community survey on the qualities they would like to see in the state’s next education commissioner.

The survey, available here, opened Jan. 21 and will close at 5 p.m. ET on Feb. 6. It takes about five minutes to complete.

KDE Chief Performance Officer Karen Dodd told the board that almost 3,300 responses have been received, primarily from school district and school-based employees.

The survey is based upon a tool from the Council of Chief State School Officers that KBE has used for commissioners to self-evaluate their performance.

The results of the survey will be presented to the board at a later meeting to help shape the job description for the next education commissioner.
