Now Available: ‘Literacy vs. literacy: What’s the Difference?' and Social Justice and Equity Science Modules
You can view the “'Literacy’ vs. ‘literacy’ What’s the Difference?” video, which provides guidance from the KDE Science Consultant Rae McEntyre. The accompanying PowerPoint slides include links to graphic organizers that can be used by a professional learning community to begin discussions in identifying and being more intentional in embedding literacy practices in science instruction.
The Social Justice and Equity module is designed to build the capacity of teachers in identifying the range of intellectual resources students use as they make sense of phenomena. Participants will first explore how equity and justice relate to culture-based approaches to pedagogy. The focus will then switch to how to identify and leverage the resources students use in moments of sense-making.
The module includes three sessions that build upon one another to provide a scaffolding in understanding and identifying phenomena. A module at a glance document, a facilitator’s guide and the Social Justice and Equity Module are all available.
These materials can also be found on the Science Professional Learning Modules webpage on KYstandards.org.
