'Literacy vs. literacy: What’s the Difference?' Module Releases Tomorrow
The standards team will release one digital professional learning opportunity each month to help participants dive deeper into the Kentucky Academic Standards for that month’s focus content area.
The “‘Literacy’ vs. ‘literacy’ What’s the Difference?” digital professional learning opportunity will be released on Jan. 30 and will include materials that can be used by a professional learning community to begin discussions in identifying and being more intentional in embedding literacy practices in science instruction alongside a recording that includes additional guidance from the KDE science consultant Rae McEntyre.

Focus on Social Studies
During February, the Standards Team will focus on the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies with two informative webcasts and the release of a digital professional learning opportunity at the end of the month. The best learning will result from participating in all three activities, however, please join us as you are able!

This webcast will highlight resources to support the implementation of the KAS for Social Studies and how to access these resources. Several new KAS for Social Studies resources were added to KYstandards.org near the end of 2019, so join us to be sure you are up to date with everything that’s available!
‘Elementary Social Studies Focus: Healthy Integration of the KAS for Social Studies and the KAS for Reading and Writing’ Webcast 9 a.m. ET Feb. 20
This webcast will preview the release of a new social studies module and discuss healthy integration at the elementary school level using the KAS for Social Studies and the KAS for Reading and Writing as the foundation of this work.

This month’s digital professional learning opportunity is a brand new module that will explain the value of social studies experiences for students in elementary school and the benefits of content knowledge for reading comprehension and writing skills. Additionally, this module will focus on building teacher capacity to effectively implement the newly adopted KAS for Social Studies and the KAS for Reading and Writing. Participants will discover the connections between the two sets of standards and be empowered to teach social studies as a compelling content for growing proficient readers and writers.
