‘Using the Social Studies Alignment Tool’ Workshop Set for Nov. 21 at 4 and 5 p.m. ET
The "Using the Social Studies Alignment Tool," virtual workshop will take place Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET. Participants will practice using the alignment tools for the Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies with guidance from Kentucky Department of Education content consultants. Using alignment tools is a powerful way to ensure student tasks are aligned to standards.
Use these links to attend either the 4 p.m. session or the 5 p.m. session.
This is the third installment of a three-part series about social studies. It is recommended, but not essential, to review a recording of the first webcast, ‘"Social Studies," and the second, "Social Studies Alignment Tool," before attending the virtual workshop.
Four New Social Studies Resources Now Available
In support of the implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies, the Kentucky Department of Education has released two new professional learning modules, a KAS for Social Studies Glossary of Terms and a Social Studies Student Work Review Protocol.
The two new modules, "Minding the Gap" and "KAS for Social Studies: Inquiry Ready" can be accessed through the Social Studies Professional Learning Modules webpage on KYStandards. The glossary and work review protocol can be found on the Social Studies Resources webpage.
Minding the Gap Module
The "Minding the Gap" module provides district leaders, school administrators, instructional specialists/coaches, department chairs and/or teacher leaders guidance on how to identify and close gaps in their social studies program when implementing the KAS for Social Studies. The goals of this module include:
- Build a shared understanding of the KAS for Social Studies progressions and grade-level expectations.
- Begin to map the expectations of the KAS for Social Studies to current practice and curricula.
- Identify gaps and overlaps between the KAS for Social Studies and current practice and curricula.
- Identify and prioritize existing gaps and consider available curriculum resources, time allocation for each content area and any additional solutions to eliminate gaps.
- Create a proposed plan of action to successfully implement the 2019 KAS for Social Studies and close gaps.
Inquiry Ready Module
The "KAS for Social Studies: Inquiry Ready" module contains three online modules for developing an understanding of the new social studies standards. As educators start aligning programs (curricula, pacing guides, assessments, etc.) to the new standards, they may find that they need to be immersed in the instructional shifts that the new standards require.
These online modules help educators by unpacking big ideas (inquiry, equity, literacy and action) and instructional tools for the work. The goals of this module include:
-
Module One: Big Ideas of Social Studies –This module focuses on inquiry, specifically how inquiry is defined in the KAS for Social Studies and how inquiry relates to equity, action and literacy.
-
Module Two: Making Inquiry Visible in Social Studies – This module aims to help teachers become clear about the practice of inquiry by designing an inquiry using the Inquiry Design Model. As you work through the module, you will be building out the elements of the blueprint.
-
Module Three: Getting to Work – This module focuses on getting to work using inquiry in elementary, middle and high school classrooms.
KAS for Social Studies Glossary of Terms
Terms are used throughout the KAS for Social Studies. The KAS for Social Studies Glossary of Terms provides an alphabetical list of definitions and descriptions of these terms.
The KAS for Social Studies writing committee identified terms that they felt were essential to understanding the content and skills in the standards. The identified vocabulary terms listed are possible suggestions; they are not the only terms that may be used during instruction. Additionally, it is important to note that merely knowing the definitions of these terms is not enough to obtain mastery of the standards.
Social Studies Student Work Review Protocol
The Social Studies Student Work Review Protocol is used to determine how well the individual student work reflects the work required to master the content and skills required by the KAS for Social Studies. The student work review protocol is intended to help teachers answer the question, “Are students demonstrating the expectations of the content and skills of the KAS for Social Studies?”
After completing sections one through three, you will have the opportunity to reflect and determine changes that need to be made to better address the expectations of the standards if the assignment is weakly or partially aligned.
