KDE Seeking Feedback on Technology Standards
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the current Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology (K-12).
Senate Bill 1 (2017) calls for KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments with one or two content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis.
Now through Nov. 15, anyone interested is invited to review the draft technology standards to share feedback and suggestions. Feedback and comments will be thoughtfully considered and any needed revisions made before submitting a draft of proposed standards to the Kentucky Board of Education.
To provide feedback on the Kentucky Academic Standards for Technology, access this google document, where you can read the standards and leave comments. Due to the amount of text within the survey, it is recommended that the survey be completed on a full-size computer or laptop.
Kentucky Academic Standards for K-12 Career Studies Update
The Kentucky Academic Standards for K-12 Career Studies (formally known as vocational studies) were presented for a second reading to the Kentucky Board of Education at its October meeting and have begun the legislative approval process. Dependent upon feedback, the standards are anticipated to be approved for classroom implementation during the 2020-2021 school year.
Although not a tested area, KRS 156:160 requires school districts to ensure student access to standards through programs, services and operational performance. The standards should support and guide development of a students’ Individual Learning Plan (ILP).
The K-12 Career Studies standards are comprised of three domains:
CAREERS
This strand addresses career exploration and guides students to explore factors such as personal interests and educational requirements as they begin to consider possible careers. At the middle school grade-band, students are introduced to Kentucky’s 16 Career Clusters and corresponding career pathways as they develop an Individual Learning Plan to plan for and take advantage of opportunities to earn dual/articulated credit and/or industry certificates, as well as participating in real-world learning experiences.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Essential Skills replaces the previous employability domain. It was framed around KRS 158.1413 Essential Workplace Ethics Instruction requirement. Standards to address speaking and listening skills are included within this domain.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
The Financial Literacy domain combines the previous consumer decisions and financial literacy standards. The standards within the high school grade band were written to meet the KRS 158.1411 Financial Literacy high school graduation requirement. Common strands across the K-12 grade bands support development of financially literate individuals as they transition to the postsecondary world.
