(FRANKFORT, KY) – The Kentucky Department of Education will host a news conference at 1 p.m. ET Wednesday, June 5, to announce the launch of a summer reading initiative as part of the national READ Up: Stop the Summer Slide℠ program.

READ Up, an initiative of the Children's Reading Foundation, aims to reverse the summer slide, an occurrence where school-age children can lose up to three months of reading skills during the summer break. The summer slide begins the first week students are out of school.

Commissioner Wayne Lewis, Deputy Commissioner Amanda Ellis and others will speak during the event.

The news conference will be held in room 514 of the Kentucky Department of Education's headquarters, 300 Sower Blvd., Frankfort. The event will be livestreamed on KDE's media portal, mediaportal.education.ky.gov.
