Fire/EMS
Brush 1
Today, Fire/EMS placed vehicle Brush 1 in service. The 2003 Stewart & Stevenson M1078A1 truck was purchased via military surplus and subsequently modified, retrofitted, painted and equipped to become our newest grass and wildland firefighting apparatus. Deputy Chief Cory Lehman was in charge of the project, completing much of the work himself. He did an outstanding job on this project. We look for this truck to serve our citizens for years to come.

Emberhope luncheon
On Thursday this week, Emberhope invited Newton Police Department and Newton Fire/EMS out to their campus for a first responder appreciation lunch. In addition to the great lunch that was provided, a good-spirited game of kickball broke out between Emberhope residents and first responders.
DMSU training
Members of our Disaster Medical Support Unit (DMSU) spent the better part of the day training with other DMSU teams from our region. The training focused on wide-area search practices, and the utilization of GPS-locating devices. Additionally, the teams performed several evolutions of deploying a mobile field hospital. While we certainly hope we never have to use these skills for real-life events, it is imperative that they remain honed through regular training activities.
Chief Roberson
In August, the Center for Public Safety Excellence recognized and awarded Fire/EMS Chief Steve Roberson the professional designation of Chief Fire Officer, making him one of only 1,833 CFO’s worldwide. Additionally, earlier this year, Steve was recognized and awarded the designation of Chief EMS Officer, making him one of only 177 Chief EMS Officers worldwide and one of only 99 people to hold both designations.
The Center for Public Safety Excellence credentialing program uses a comprehensive peer review model to evaluate individuals who demonstrate excellence in seven measured components including experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement, and technical competence. In addition, all are required to identify a future professional development plan. The Commission on Professional Credentialing awards the designation only after an individual successfully meets all the organization’s stringent criteria.
Achieving these designations signifies and reconfirms Steve’s career commitment to the fire and emergency services. Congratulations, Chief!

Meridian Center
This week, Meridian Center was honored to be selected to host one of eight in-person KDOT meetings as part of the 2023 Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) Local Consult process. Local Consult is a two-year rolling program that gives KDOT a forum to listen to regional needs from Kansans who live and work in each of KDOT's six districts and two metro areas. Participants had the opportunity to share their region's transportation priorities, hear about investments being made in transportation in their area, and learn about the various grant funding programs available through KDOT. The group was pleased with the turnout, saying this was the best attended meeting thus far, and added that that they received comments from several attendees who were impressed with Newton and our conference center.
