 Fire/EMS
It's not every day that our teams get to train in real houses! Actual houses make training more realistic than the usual space at our training grounds. In firefighter lingo, this is "acquired structure" training. The reality is we occasionally use pre-demolition houses to perform various fire training evolutions from search and rescue to ventilation. Here, C Shift works on searching a house, looking for victims (mannequins) who have been overcome with heat and smoke. Thanks to The Gathering Church for letting us use these properties in Newton.
Historic Preservation
We are pleased to report that the State Historic Preservation Office notified us on Friday of a successful $30,000 Historic Preservation Fund grant to fund a survey of historic resources in downtown Newton. The City plans to re-survey the downtown to assist with future historic rehabilitation projects and Main Street initiatives.
Meridian Center
For the week ending July 28, Meridian Center hosted six events, including a monthly Chamber breakfast, a wedding reception, a legal deposition, a golf course meeting, a large corporate management meeting, and a small social event. The team also booked four future corporate events and two future association events. The month of July was busy, and we continue to see future bookings remain steady.
Police
On Friday (Aug. 4) we were honored to host the annual Kansas Association of Police Chiefs (KACP) Valor Tournament at Sand Creek Station Golf Course. The mission of the tournament is to raise money for KACP's Valor Foundation, which provides financial support to Kansas law enforcement and death benefits to the families of fallen officers. Special thanks to Vice Mayor Rod Kreie and Lt. Jason Thompson for helping welcome our guests and kicking off the event!
We were also pleased to welcome a new officer to the department this week, Chris Brown. Chris comes to us from the U.S. Marine Corps and is just starting his law enforcement career.

Sales Tax
July 2023 sales tax receipts were up 20.52% over July 2022, and were up 8.69% year to date over the same time period in 2022. We are happy to see continued growth, since these funds help the City diversify revenue streams from a dependence on property taxes.
