Police
Sgt. Brandon Deck and Det. Tony Hawpe attended Trauma in Law Enforcement training hosted by the Concerns Of Police Survivors (COPS) in Wichita. They are both part of the NPD Peer Support Team.
Additionally, School Resource Officer Lanna Carroll attended Basic School Resource Officer certification in the Kansas City area hosted by the National Association of School Resource Officers. As a new SRO, this training will be integral in her development and growth.
Sand Creek Station Golf Course
On July 2, Sand Creek Station will host the annual Red, White and Blue Tournament, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. There are still a few spots available for interested individuals or teams. The entry fee is $100 per person, and funds go toward “Mission 22,” an organization that benefits Veteran Suicide Awareness. To reserve your spot, call the pro shop at 316-284-6161. We hope you will join us and support such a worthy cause!
Municipal Pool
At Friday’s Newton Recreation Commission (NRC) meeting, staff reported that the municipal pool has had a slow start to the season. During the first 14 days, nine days either had no opening or early closure due to rain. At this time last year, there were 11 days over 90 degrees; so far this year, there has been only one. As we know, the No. 1 driver for pool use is hot weather. There have been 1,979 fewer swimmers this year compared to the same timeframe last year. Warmer days are ahead in July and August, and we anticipate usage will pick up during the warmer months. For context, it costs the NRC $750 each day just to open up the pool.
Summer Concert Series at Warkentin House
We are pleased to announce that the Warkentin House will be hosting a summer concert series over the summer on Sundays for the next few months. Concerts will include food trucks, and self-guided tours of the Warkentin House Museum will be available. Admission is free and donations are appreciated and accepted to benefit the House. Limited seating is available and those that attend should plan to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets. This Sunday (June 25) was the first concert and featured the group Hearts 4 Him. Other upcoming dates and artists are above!
2024 Budget Development
The Commission will hold a second budget work session to continue work on the draft 2024 General Fund budget on Wednesday, June 28, at 8 AM. You can find all the department presentations and work session materials on our website. As a reminder for the timeline of budget development, the Commission will set the intent to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) on July 11, set a not-to-exceed budget for publication on Aug. 8, and hold the RNR and budget public hearings on Aug. 22.
