Choose Newton and the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce's Downtown Promotions Committee are teaming up to offer a one-night workshop on emergency preparedness and response geared toward businesses and their employees as well as event organizers and volunteers. Representatives from Harvey County Emergency Management, Newton Fire/EMS, and the Newton Police Department will lead the presentation.
The workshop will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Prairy Mezzanine and will last approximately 90 minutes. The goal will be providing information for those locations or events where the health and safety of multiple people/customers has to be considered in an emergency.
Parking will be available along Sixth Street or in the public parking lot at Sixth and Poplar.
The entrance is located toward the back of the building on Sixth Street. A long hallway leads to a staircase to the mezzanine level. There is also an elevator located near the stairs.
Local tourism leaders in Kansas are building a website and statewide network of gravel cycling routes to help bolster the state's position as the gravel cycling capital. The well-known Unbound Gravel race will take place in early June in Emporia, but gravel enthusiasts in Harvey County can follow a mapped 41-mile ride through the southeastern part of the county any time they wish. The route, which begins and ends at the YMCA parking lot, is one of multiple local routes that eventually will be included in the eventual Gravel Kansas list of rides in the state.
The National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men's Golf Championship will be played at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton from May 16 to May 19, but look for players and their supporters, coaches, and tournament staff to be in town for the entire week.
