The National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men's Golf Championship will begin Tuesday, May 16, and conclude on Friday, May 19, at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton. More than 120 golfers representing college teams from all over the country will participate.
Tournament play will take place Tuesday through Friday that week, but participants and their families may be coming to town the weekend before the event. Sand Creek Station is hosting a welcome barbecue Sunday, May 14. Following the practice round on Monday, May 15, a banquet will be hosted by the Meridian Center.
Newton CVB is working with Sand Creek Station in preparing 200 welcome bags for players, coaches and tournament officials. Information on shops, restaurants and attractions also will be part of digital tournament packets made available to the teams and their fans. If you would like to have a coupon or flyer included in the materials distributed, please contact Toby Carrig (tcarrig@newtonkansas.com) or contact Chris Tuohey or Dustin Housh at Sand Creek Station, 316-284-6161.
The Newton Chamber of Commerce has produced a one-page flyer of information to be included in the packet, and it also will have welcome signs available to post in windows and other locations around town.

Choose Newton had representation at the Main Street Now 2023 Conference in Boston in March, and the event featured many informative presentations. One of the best was Jon Schallert's workshop on how to create a destination business.
Mr. Schallert has taught Destination BootCamp training sessions for more than two decades, helping more than 1,800 businesses stand out from the crowd. His examples included businesses based in small towns that serve large customer bases by thinking big.
Notes from his presentation and a link another to a similar webinar, "The 12 Advantages of a Destination Business and How to Become One," can be accessed at https://www.jonschallert.com/msnow/. (Some of the presentation in the link feels like an infomercial for the BootCamps, but it also has good information to think about, and it runs less than an hour.)
Choose Newton has established a YouTube channel, featuring the videos produced by Parawave Media for the City. The channel currently features content highlighting our big events from 2022, and it will continue to grow with videos featuring businesses, attractions and reasons to Choose Newton.
The videos also will be used in Facebook campaigns to help promote upcoming events.

Motorists on Interstate 135 can see what Newton has to offer, thanks to a one-year agreement between the City of Newton and Outdoor Vision to utilize four digital billboard screens in a promotional campaign.
The billboard locations include north- and south-facing signs on the west side of the Interstate just north of 12th Street and near SE 24th Street.
Guidelines regarding content are being developed, and an application form will be available soon.
The billboard campaign was activated earlier this month, promoting events such as the Chisholm Trail Bike Ride, Newton Car Show, and more.

Do you know what to do in the event of developing weather or a medical emergency? Newton CVB and the Chamber of Commerce's Downtown Promotions Committee will be offering a one-night workshop geared toward businesses and their employees as well as event organizers and volunteers. First responders with Harvey County Emergency Management, Newton Fire/EMS, and the Newton Police Department will address topics such as disaster preparedness, medical emergency response, and active shooter situations.
The workshop will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Prairy Mezzanine and will last approximately 90 minutes.
The City was notified recently that it was awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Trust Preservation Fund to support a proposed project, Then and Now: Newton Historic Photo Walking Tour. Rebecca Likiardopoulos, Director of Administrative Services and Historic Preservation Officer, and CVB Coordinator Toby Carrig have been working with the Harvey County Historical Society Curator Kristine Schmucker and Director Catherine Graves on the project, which will utilize smart phone technology to bring the history of downtown Newton to life.
When complete, the project will allow visitors to take a self-guided tour of downtown that will include background information and images of our historic buildings. The grant funding will help to pay for staff time in converting the information and images and also for initial costs related to setting up the app.
