The Newton City Commission on March 14 accepted the bylaws of the Newton Land Bank, which was established by ordinance in October of 2021.
Land banks are governmental entities or nonprofit corporations that are focused on the conversion of vacant, abandoned, and tax delinquent properties into productive use.
The Newton Land Bank on March 16 received its first two properties, which are being offered to the public. The properties are located at 116 S. Kansas Ave. and 324 E. 11th St.

In 2021, American Express and Main Street America created the Backing Small Businesses grant program to help economically vulnerable small business owners recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and grow their businesses. In its first year, the program provided $1.65 million in grants to more than 300 small business owners across the country.
Now in its second year, the program will increase the number of grants awarded and total funding to more than $2.3 million to further support small business owners in building their economic vitality and fostering a thriving community. On March 20, 2023, applications will open for 350 small business grants of $5,000 to eligible businesses in the U.S. and territories.

Newton High School and Bethel College will host a hiring event on 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26 at Bethel College. It is open to Newton High School students, Bethel students, and all job seekers.
To register your organization to attend, follow this link. There is no cost, but space is limited to the first 50 organizations.

The City of Newton has reached an agreement with Outdoor Vision to utilize the digital billboards along Interstate 135. The billboards are located near the U.S. 50 interchange north of Broadway and near NMC Health and the YMCA, both facing northbound and southbound traffic. Choose Newton has created a YouTube channel to share videos showcasing everything that makes Newton great.
The channel includes event videos from 2022 and early 2023 and will feature videos that showcase the attractions, restaurants, shops, and quality of life amenities of Newton.
