At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Commission approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Newton Healthcare Corporation (NMC Health) that authorizes the Newton Police Department and NMC Health to be partners in a comprehensive community policing program.
As part of the agreement, NMC Health will provide a designated office area on the NMC campus. Further, NMC will provide compensation to the City in the amount of $85,000 to help offset salary costs.
The agreement outlines a formal rotation of officers to make rounds on the NMC Health Campus and to patrol an area around and adjacent to NMC. This program will not involve the assignment of a single officer but rather the rotation of an entire shift.
The MOU makes it clear that the Hospital Resource Officers remain officers of the Newton Police Department and are limited to enforcing local law.
The term of the agreement is for one-year but can be extended for any reason by either party with 90- days advance notice.
- Authorized City staff to move forward with a proposal to dissolve and reconstitute the current Planning Commission and Historic Preservation Commission structures. The Cities of Newton and North Newton currently have a joint Planning Commission, but the agencies have discussed individual Planning Commissions moving forward due to growth and unique interests and goals for each city. The City of Newton also is considering dissolving the current Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and combining the two commissions (HPC and PC) into one body.
- Received the recommendation of the Choose Newton Community Development Commission Board for changes to development policies.
- Approved the Newton Land Bank by-laws.
- Approved a request from New Jerusalem Missions for use of picnic tables and trash containers on their property at 209 East Broadway on May 6 for BBQ for Bricks.
- Approved a request from Harvey County Parents as Teachers for use of the Centennial Park parking lot for Touch-a-Truck event on May 19.
- Approved a request from Health Ministries Clinic for use of Athletic Park parking lot, snow fencing, picnic tables and trash containers for HMC Free Family Fun Day on October 14.
