This year, the Historic Preservation efforts continued with telling our community story through celebration of the Sesquicentennial and endorsing the Main Street designation of our downtown. There were 26 projects reviewed this year, slightly fewer than the 28 of 2021. Of these, all projects, were approved with 25 approved administratively and 1 approved through the State Historic Preservation Office.

Our inaugural year as a Main Street community has been a great opportunity to attend trainings, learn how our structure can continue to assist the community, and invest in our downtown. This year alone there has been a total of $335,564 invested in downtown with $118,339 in public funds and $237,225 in private investment. A total of eight new businesses opened.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau has had a facelift and new organization as it is part of the Choose Newton initiative. Projects for 2022 included supporting the city's sesquicentennial celebration, organizing the annual Best of Newton Photo Contest and calendar, promoting and coordinating The Five Places of Christmas, and producing the 2023 Visitors Guide.
Newton CVB also hosted a travel writer in September as part of a tour through the South Central Kansas region and continued the build-out of the Choose Newton website.
